An extensive 2022 assessment conducted across 601 district hospitals in 32 Sub-Saharan African countries revealed alarming gaps and disparities in access to surgical, obstetric, and anesthesia care. Major findings included the lack of national plans for such care in 75% of the countries, poor density of healthcare professionals, and significant infrastructure deficiencies in hospitals.
